GreenSCIES District Energy / Smart Energy Networks

Silver EMS are excited to be a part of the GreenSCIES (Green Smart Community Integrated Energy System) consortium, developing a revolutionary low carbon smart energy grid. GreenSCIES systems will deliver low carbon heat, mobility and power to an estimated 33,000 residents and nearly 70 local businesses in Islington. The new smart energy grid will help to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 80% (against conventional systems) while addressing fuel poverty by providing a significant reduction on consumer bills.

The system will also deliver air quality improvements by reducing pollutants while improving provision of local skills training and job prospects, helping to invigorate local economies

About GreenSCIES

GreenSCIES aims to deliver low carbon, affordable energy to the local community through a smart energy system connecting intermittent electricity demands, such as heat pumps and electric vehicles, to intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar power.

This innovative smart energy system will support effective change in consumer behaviour, deliver reductions in consumer energy costs and carbon emissions, improve local air quality and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

The smart energy grid – currently at the design stage – will provide an answer to the challenge of powering inner cities of the future, revolutionising the way we live now and transforming lives, homes and businesses into sustainable energy districts, while tackling fuel poverty and the negative effects of climate change.

Thermal Network Design

The project involves development of a 5th generation ambient loop network in Islington. Heating and cooling will be provided by heat pumps situated in buildings, each connected to the buried ambient loop network. This will also integrate thermal energy storage and waste heat recovery from a collection of locally available sources including a London Underground ventilation shaft, open loop boreholes connecting to the London aquifer, office buildings and two data centres.

Electricity Optimisation

The smart energy network will generate power from renewable energy sources whilst connecting to the electricity grid and electric vehicle charging points. This will facilitate the transition to electric vehicles and vehicle to grid supply, making the most of intermittent, locally available renewable energy, ensuring end users always get the best energy tariff though a sophisticated approach to control and commercial tariff structuring.
